Tamborine Oxenford Road Michigan Drive Proposed Upgrade
4 Oct 2023 2:42 PMMark BoothmanBusy day hitting the streets letterbox dropping and chatting with residents. Thank you to the many residents who were keen to chat. “Recently, the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) released its plans for the much-needed upgrade of Tamborine Oxenford Road and Michigan Drive. According to TMR’s own traffic count in 2021 over 19,000 vehicles use this section of daily!
After a long campaign by residents, TMR is planning to signalise this intersection. In addition, TMR has finally agreed after much lobbying, to install dedicated turning lanes into Georgina Street from Tamborine-Oxenford Road - from both directions.
The construction works include:
• Installation of intersection traffic signals and pedestrian crossing signals
• Road widening
• Relocation of street lighting
• Combined cycle lane and left-turn lane into Georgina Street from Tamborine–
Oxenford Road
• Installation of a dedicated right-turn lane into Georgina Street from Tamborine Oxenford
As a point of clarification, I have asked the Department of Main Roads the purpose of a pedestrian crossing that technically leads nowhere? A crossing without appropriate paths may encourage residents to walk along a narrow road shoulder adjacent to a long sweeping bend that has limited visibility. If there is no funding from Main Roads or Gold Coast City Council to install a footpath along Tamborine Oxenford Road, it could place lives at risk.
I have also asked what safety measures will be installed to notify motorists of queuing at the intersection - especially for those using Tamborine Oxenford Road.
Whilst these upgrades are important and needed, I note the plans lack a turn left anytime with care lane from Michigan Drive onto Tamborine Oxenford Road. I appreciate there is limited land available, however, I wonder how much consideration was given to how this will slow the traffic.
Finally, I have asked what noise mitigation is planned as part of the upgrade, especially to those affected by vehicle noise accelerating away from the traffic signals up Tamborine Oxenford Road.
Works are expected to start late 2023 and completed by mid-2024 (pending weather and site conditions).”
